The torch is lit by a parabolic mirror,which is curved.
The parabolic mirror is focused towards the sun which causes a great deal of heat.
The torch is put in the centre of the parabolic mirror, and the heat ignites the fuel in the torch sparking a flame.

The torch is lit several months before the games. It is lit in the ancient temple of Hera in Olympia where it has been done for many years since the beginning. It will be done for many years to come.The flame is taken to the first relay runner in a fire pot to the stadium.
The relay starts at Lands end on Saturday the 19th of May. It travells for 70 days to London Olympic stadium and arrives on Friday the 27th July.
The relay uses different modes of transport and on the way includes some public and private events.The torch will go to several island Isle of Man, Guernesy and Jersey.
The olympic cauldron stays lit to the end of the ceremony.
